Repeat table header rows in Hangul (HWP): keep headings on later pages
Check both the first-row selection and the setting for the whole table
To show a long table's headings on later pages in Hancom's Hangul word processor (HWP), mark the cells as header cells and enable header repetition for the table. Bold text or a background colour does not designate a header row.
Hancom's official cell properties help, in Korean, says the header-cell selection must include the table's first row. Selecting only the second row will not activate repetition.
This is a reference guide checked against official help on September 28, 2026. We did not run Hangul's Windows UI or directly test its screen or printed output while preparing this article. Menu positions may vary by version and layout, so use the feature names below to find the settings. The English UI terms below are explanatory translations of the Korean labels, not verified labels from an English edition. The Korean labels are included alongside them.
1. Mark the first row as header cells
Imagine an inventory list that extends over several pages. The values below are invented examples.
| Item ID | Item name | Quantity | Notes to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| S-101 | Folding chair | 12 | Confirm delivery date |
| S-102 | Storage box | 8 | Confirm colour |
| S-103 | Signboard | 2 | Confirm wording |
The row to repeat is the top row containing Item ID, Item name, Quantity, and Notes to check.
- Make a working copy of the document.
- Select the first row's cells as a cell block. This is different from selecting only the text inside them.
- Open Table/Cell Properties (표/셀 속성) → Cell (셀), select Header cell (제목 셀), and apply the setting.
If the headings occupy two rows, check that the range you want to repeat includes the first row. For example, if the first row contains broad categories and the second contains detailed labels, make sure you have not selected only the detailed labels. The first-row condition comes from the cell properties help linked above.
2. Set header repetition and page-break behaviour
For the same table, open Table/Cell Properties (표/셀 속성) → Table (표) and enable Repeat header rows automatically (제목 줄 자동 반복). Hancom's table properties help, in Korean, describes this as placing the headings at the start of the table on each page.
Also check that the table itself can continue onto another page. The options under At page boundary (쪽 경계에서) in the same tab have different effects.
| Setting: explanatory translation and Korean label | Behaviour described in the help | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Split (나눔) | The line crossing the page boundary and the content after it move to the next page | Can the text inside a long cell be split across pages? |
| Split by cell (셀 단위로 나눔) | A cell crossing the boundary moves in full to the next page | Does each item need to be read in one place? |
| Do not split (나누지 않음) | The table stays on one page; content outside that page is absent from both the screen and printout | Is this suitable for a list intended to span several pages? |
If the example's Notes to check column contains long sentences, compare the two split options in the working copy. Inspect the next page as well as the first, and check whether each item's content can still be followed.
3. If headings do not repeat, check the symptom first
Changing every setting at once makes it hard to identify the cause. Check one item at a time and record the original selection before changing it.
| Symptom | What to check first |
|---|---|
| The table continues on the next page, but its headings are missing | Whether the first row is marked as header cells and header repetition is enabled for the table |
| Marking the second row as header cells has no effect | Whether the selection leaves out the first row |
| The table does not continue onto the next page, or its lower content is missing | Page-break settings and the table's positioning setting |
| Two tables look joined on screen but can be selected separately | Whether you are editing one continuous table |
Hancom's multiple-page support help, in Korean, specifically says that multiple-page support does not apply to a table set to Treat as character (글자처럼 취급), and content outside the page is absent from both the screen and printout. If that setting is on, clear it in the working copy and inspect the placement of the table and nearby paragraphs again. First establish whether header repetition alone can address the symptom.
The official guidance concerns one table continuing across a page boundary. If someone split the table or pasted separate tables onto individual pages, inspect that structure first. Applying settings to several separate tables is a different task from repeating the headings of one table.
Four checks after applying the settings
These are checks to perform in your own document, not results from a test we ran. Paper size and margins vary, so this guide does not prescribe a fixed number of rows at which the table must reach the next page.
- Every page the table occupies: In the example, check that all four column headings appear together. Check the last page as well as the second.
- Items at each page boundary: Compare the item IDs at the bottom of one page and the top of the next. Check that manually adding headings has not omitted or duplicated any items.
- After editing a heading: In the working copy, change Notes to check to Review notes and inspect the headings on subsequent pages.
- The file you will submit: If you are submitting a PDF, open the final PDF and repeat the checks. Enabling a setting and confirming that the submitted file is readable are separate checks.
Someone reading only a later page should be able to tell which column each number belongs to. Before saving, check both the repeated headings and the completeness of the body data.
